Department of Elementary Education
Mission
The mission of the Department of Elementary Education is to prepare and foster the further development of pre-K-8th grade teachers facing the complexity of classroom life. Both the Elementary Education undergraduate programs, which lead to teacher certification, and graduate program, which leads to an M.Ed. and state endorsements, prepare students to design and implement instructional programs for children. Students develop knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to teach children from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Undergraduate
The Early Childhood Teaching and Leadership program housed in the College of Teacher Education and Leadership (CTEL) is designed to give students a firm grounding in early childhood pedagogy and programming with a special emphasis on community connectedness, technology integration, and administration, policy analysis and advocacy related to young children and their families. Every semester students are engaged in field experiences and internships that align with their academic program.
The BAE in Elementary Education leads to eligibility for certification to teach children from grades 1 - 8. Elementary Education is a major within the Professional Teacher Preparation Program, ASU's comprehensive, integrated curriculum for teacher preparation.
Graduate
The M.Ed. in Elementary Education offers six different specializations meeting the professional needs of both aspiring and current teachers. In this program, students are able to interact effectively with peers and instructors while enjoying intimate classroom settings and individual attention from caring faculty.
The M.Ed. Elementary Education with Certification meets Arizona's requirements for teacher certification. It is designed for those with bachelor's degrees who wish to earn both an M.Ed. degree and become certified. Two streams and a number of formats are available for this specialization.
