Cooperating Teachers of Student Teachers

Cooperating Teachers of Student Teachers:

Mentors of student teachers are crucial models and guides to pre-service teachers. They are expected to observe and provide feedback, coach and support the intern, and complete three written evaluations of the student teacher. To assure that all student teachers are mentored and evaluated in a consistent manner, a teacher hosting a CTEL student teacher is required to participate in Assessment and Supervision training. The training is one Saturday (8 hours) or two evenings (4 hours each). It is recommended that the teacher do this before accepting a student teacher; however, the training may be taken concurrently with mentorship, since it is offered during the beginning of each semester before student teachers have taken full charge of the classroom. A teacher will be granted a waiver if s/he:

  • has taken the residency training through an approved educational institution; or
  • holds a doctorate, an administrative certificate, or a state supervisor's certificate; or
  • has successfully completed EDA 521 (Evaluation of Teaching Performance), EDA 526 (Instructional Supervision), or an equivalent course.

The Cooperating Teacher of a student teacher receives either a $360 stipend or a 6 credit hour ASU tuition waiver or 6 Learning Forever with ASU workshop coupons.
Student teachers are full-time practice teachers in the final semester (Block 4) of their program. They begin with observation and participation; gradually assuming more responsibility for preparation, instruction, and classroom management.
