Field Experience provides the opportunity for students to:

  • Apply ASU coursework
  • Observe master teachers
  • Experience diversity of philosophies, strategies, and settings
  • Participate in many of the responsibilities and skills required of teachers

Through ASU’s College of Teacher Education and Leadership, undergraduate and postbaccalaureate students form valuable partnerships with teachers and school districts.  These mutually beneficial field experiences are required throughout their programs of study.  Education programs at ASU's West campus lead to teacher certification and require field experience during each semester.  The responsibilities of students in their field experience vary according to their program and level.

Undergraduate Professional Teacher Preparation Program:

During three semesters (Blocks 1, 2, and 3) students spend 5-10 hours per week in the classroom, depending upon their level in the education program, at ASU's West campus. They are observers and part-time participants while in the classroom. In the final semester of each program (Block 4) students are required to fulfill their student teaching experience. Student teaching requires 15 weeks of full-time (all day) participation in the classroom. When all program requirements have been met, students receive an Institutional Recommendation and are given the opportunity to be certified by the Arizona Department of Education. For more information regarding the Special Programs please visit the College of Teacher Education and Leadership Academic Advising website.

Master's with Certification (MAC):

MAC students participate in coursework at Arizona State University's West campus or at Deer Valley. Field experience work is completed at specific districts. For more information, contact graduate advising at CTELgrad@asu.edu, phone 602-543-3634 or come to an information session.
