Rodel:

The College of Teacher Education and Leadership is a proud partner with the Rodel Charitable Foundation of Arizona in matching Rodel Exemplary Teachers with promising student teachers.  In the first year of the partnership, the Rodel Charitable Foundation Teacher Initiative selected 10 exemplary teachers from low-income schools basing their selection on high student achievement scores, principals' recommendations, observation, and interviews.  The teachers were awarded a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond in recognition of their outstanding instructional skills in the classroom, and in exchange will for three years mentor student teachers motivated to learn how to best work with low-income elementary school students.

The College of Teacher Education and Leadership students selected were awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the West campus to defray the cost of tuition during their student teaching.    Rodel student teachers are selected based on their commitment to educating children in high poverty areas, their academic record, previous field experience evaluations, an essay, personal and professional recommendations, and an interview.  Elementary, early childhood and English-as-a-second-language program student teachers will work exclusively with one of the 10 Rodel Exemplary Teachers in an urban school district within Maricopa County.  The selected student teachers will be encouraged to continue to teach in a high-poverty school after completion of their teacher preparation program.  Those students who successfully complete three consecutive years of teaching in a high poverty school in any part of Arizona will be awarded a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond by the Rodel Charitable Foundation of Arizona.

This partnerships offer the College of Teacher Education and Leadership students a remarkable opportunity to work with the best teachers, a scholarship to defray tuition cost, the potential to earn a $10,000 U.S. Savings bond and to make teaching in high-poverty areas an attractive and rewarding career option.  The Rodel Charitable Foundation Teacher Initiative has begun to address the need for highly qualified teachers in our state's neediest schools by identifying and pairing exemplary teachers with pre-service teachers in a partnership that makes winners out of us all!  We in the College of Teacher Education and Leadership are proud to be a part of making this partnership a success.
