M.Ed. Special Education
with Arizona Certification
Degree
The master's degree in Special Education with Arizona Certification is a specialization designed for those with bachelor's degrees who wish to earn an M.Ed. degree along with dual Arizona certifications in K-12 Special Education and 1-8 Elementary Education. In addition, students receive a Mild Cross-Categorical Endorsement and provisional ESL endorsement. See state requirements.
Students must complete a total of 51 credit hours consisting of:
- M.Ed. core (9 hours)

- Elementary Education (3 hours)

- ESL/BLE (6 hours)
(BLE 520, BLE 522)
- Reading (3 hours)
(RDG 531)
- Special Education (15 hours)

- Applied Project (3 hours)

- Field Experience (0 credit hours)
(SPE 397, SPE 496)
- Student Teaching (12 hours)

Prerequisites
Two types of prerequisites must be met:
- Content Math (e.g., MTE 180, MTE 181, or MTE 180+) or:
- Students can take the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments (AEPA) subject knowledge exam for Elementary Education. Provide CTEL’s graduate office with a passing score on this exam and we will waive the math requirement. This passing score must be provided to our office prior to beginning the program.
- Introductory Special Education (SPE 222, SPE 311, or SPE 511)
