Mission

Thanks to generous support from both the Intel Corporation and the College of Teacher Education and Leadership (CTEL), a state-of-the-art multimedia lab opened during the Fall 2005 semester. The CTEL/Intel Lab located in CLCC 206 will greatly enhance the ability of CTEL students to integrate multimedia technologies into their learning activities and assignments. Between the first semester of the teacher preparation program and the student teaching semester, there will be many additional courses and assignments that will benefit from the use of the technologies available in the CTEL/Intel lab, such as ECD 324, where students will be creating videos that can be used in social studies instruction.

The lab will be staffed by a combination of graduate and undergraduate students from the College, and will be open an average of 50 hours a week for classes, workshops, and individual work time for students. In a typical week, the lab will be open during a variety of times, including weekends and some evenings, to best meet the needs of CTEL students.

Each student station can import digital images from scanners and from tape decks, which handle both digital and VHS tapes. Students can then use a wide variety of software packages, such as Photoshop Elements, Moviemaker, and Adobe Premiere Elements to combine and edit their images. These tape decks allow exporting, as well, so students can create a digital movie, but export it to a VHS tape, which is still the most commonly available tape format in homes and schools. Students can also burn their projects onto DVDs, as each computer has a built-in DVD burner.

Both Intel and the College of Teacher Education and Leadership have made significant investments in this lab, and it should be noted that these investments are being protected through the use of a key card access system (recording whose card is used to open the room), and two video surveillance cameras in the room. To make the most of this investment, the College is working directly with faculty to encourage them to use this facility to enhance the professional skills of CTEL graduates and prepare them to integrate digital technologies into the learning process of their K-12 students.
